Efficient Charcoal Stoves for a Sustainable Future

Project Overview

In 2019, in collaboration with Green Seat and the Carbon Neutral Group, we proudly supported a great initiative aimed at providing new, efficient charcoal stoves to the most vulnerable households in Uganda.

Background

In Africa, over 850 million individuals still rely on wood and charcoal for their cooking needs. However, this dependence on inefficient stoves has severe health implications. Indoor pollution resulting from these stoves contributes to the deterioration of women's and children's well-being, causing nearly half of pneumonia-related deaths in children under the age of five.

Moreover, this reliance on traditional stoves comes at a significant environmental cost. Inefficient combustion leads to excessive wood and charcoal consumption, posing a threat to precious forest resources and generating unnecessary greenhouse gas emissions.

The Cooking Stove Project

By introducing more efficient stoves, we not only create a healthier environment but also alleviate the financial burden on families. Inefficient stoves require larger amounts of wood or charcoal, often obtained through labor-intensive gathering activities performed by women or children. By adopting efficient stoves, families save time and resources, allowing women to attend to their other responsibilities and children to have more dedicated hours in school.

Results

In close collaboration with local communities, our partner organisations have achieved a significant milestone. Over a 3-year period, our impact includes:

  • 237 cookstoves in use
  • 765 people benefited
  • 71,796 units of wood saved
  • 310.26 tons of CO2 reduction

The results of this project align with the following UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

  • 1 - No poverty
  • 3 - Good health & well-being
  • 5 - Gender equality
  • 7 - Affordable and clean energy
  • 8 - Decent work and economic growth
  • 13 - Climate action
  • 15 - Life on land

But the impact doesn't stop there! This transformative initiative extends across Uganda, with the production and sale of these stoves driven by a network of local entrepreneurs. Together, we are making a real difference in the lives of communities while actively promoting environmental conservation.
